Zlatan
Zlatan Plenković is one of the key figures in Croatian wine. He started as a poor fisherman who hustled, taking on vast quantities of personal debt, to build what is one of Croatian wine's great success stories. Becoming an official winery in 1991, it was only the second private winery in Croatia formed in the wake of the Yugoslavian breakup.
These vineyards are located on the prized southern exposure 35%-45% drastic slopes of Hvar Island. With an altitude level ranging from approximately the sea level to 1,000 meters, only Ribera Sacra and the Mosel can compare to the vineyards of Zlatan Otok. Hvar Island is considered to be one of the sunniest places in the entire Mediterranean, receiving on average 2,724 hours of beautiful sunshine per year.
Because of the more than ideal climate, this is considered an organic microclimate perfect for vine growing, which the Ancient Greeks settled and planted with vines pre-Roman Empire. The Zlatan Otok vineyards are spread between three locations along with the Hvar vineyards: the Makarska vineyards below Mt. Biokovo and the vineyards in nearby Svibenik.
