Athenee Importers & Distributors
Athenee Importers was founded in 1974 by husband and wife team Anthony and Giota Englisis. After initially beginning with wines from France, the couple decided to turn their attention to the newly forming wine industry in Greece. Their intention was to bring Greek wines, spirits and beers to the US market at a time when the region was still relatively unknown.
By the early 1990s, the industry in Greece began changing with the introduction of smaller, family owned estates growing their grapes and producing their wines. As a result of increasing quality driven wines coming from the small to medium sized estates, the couple decided to turn their focus to this emerging segment of the market. Since the mid 1990s, Athenee Importers began focusing on working with more in depth with this market segment in order to help elevate indigenous varieties and regions.
In 1996, the couple’s daughter, Andrea, joined the company upon completing her college studies. Andrea began working in the office learning the business from the ground up. In 1997, Anthony passed away suddenly while on vacation, leaving the mother daughter duo to continue running the company. During this difficult time, the company persevered and continues to grow by adding new properties into the portfolio from Greece and Cyprus. Additionally, Andrea completed her Diploma in Wine & Spirits from the UK-based WSET during this time.
With over 40 years of experience in working with Greek and Cypriot producers, Athenee has focused on fine tuning the portfolio to represent the best quality from all regions. With that, Athenee is able to offer a well rounded portfolio of wines, spirits and beers from Greece and Cyprus at all price points and styles.
Athenee’s team is consistently educating its distributor partners and consumers on this lesser known region of the world in order to promote quality at all levels. We believe education and perseverance are the keys to success in expanding the US consumer’s awareness for the amazing products produced in Greece and Cyprus.
